Take your advocacy skills to a new level.

Effective advocacy is a skill that requires repeated practice and refinement. And, for the more experienced legal professional, the complexity and challenges of cases also tend to increase with time, making it even more imperative to continually hone advocacy skills.

Whether your current skills have developed through your own practical experience representing clients or enforcement agencies in Provincial Offences Court or learned through the basic Osgoode POA Certificate program, this new and intensive Osgoode certificate will take your advocacy skills to a new level.

Designed for the more experienced POA practitioner, over the course of six modules, this certificate will elevate your written and oral advocacy skills. Guided by expert facilitators consisting of prosecutors, defence counsel and Justices of the Peace, the program focuses on learn-by-doing workshops where you will get individualized feedback, and participate in small-group discussions and exercises.

You’ll work with multiple case scenarios that address each area of examination – evidence, trial practice, sentencing and appeals and focus on the more challenging and perplexing issues, including how to handle multiple evidentiary issues and conduct a complex cross-examination. Short learning sessions will review best practices and give you the opportunity to ask questions and build connections with faculty and peers.

Space is strictly limited to make certain that each attendee receives the personal attention necessary to enhance the quality and impact of the learning experience. To ensure that you get the most out of all of the workshops, please note that you will be expected to review materials, and prepare, in advance of each module.

Registration includes 120-day unlimited, online access to the recorded program.

NOTE: The workshops on May 13, June 3 and June 10 will NOT be recorded. Live attendance is required.

What You’ll Learn

You’ll receive practical strategies and best practices on:

Reviewing and assessing all of the evidence

How to handle POA matters that raise complex evidentiary issues

Drafting a Charter application or response

Developing and conducting an examination-in-chief and cross-examination for more complicated POA matters

Making submissions on sentencing for the defence or prosecution

Identifying areas to appeal

Drafting a notice of appeal (and grounds)

Take advantage of this unique learning opportunity while fulfilling your LSO CPD requirement for 2023.
