Andrea Chau

Luis Negrón Peralta is a Peruvian lawyer (called to the Bar in Peru in 2010) who has worked in both the public and private sectors specializing in labour and employment law. He’s currently a student in OsgoodePD’s LLM in Labour Relations and Employment Law. Here we discuss his experience in the program as an international student.

If you were to return to Peru now what impact would the program have on your practice?

The Labour Relations and Employment Law LLM would enhance my practice in Peru.

The courses in the program focus on contemporary issues in labour and employment law. Currently, Peru is beginning to find solutions through regulation to changes in the labour market (e.g. proliferation of multinational companies and telecommuting).

Further, there is a global trend to viewing labour relations and employment law through a human rights lens. Canada is not only a leader country in human rights development, but is also an important influence for other countries in this area of law. The development of policies and legislation that enhance human rights and labour law could be accelerated by professionals and scholars who bring these ideas to Peru.

What stands out about the Labour Relations and Employment Law program?

The quality and expertise of the professors are unmatched. Not only are they globally recognized experts, they’re also amazing teachers. Each class has been engaging and dives into both the theoretical aspects and the practical application of labour and employment law.

Students in the program come from all different backgrounds. Having classmates with a wide range of professional experience (some students are lawyers, and others are professionals working labour and employment roles) has given me the opportunity to be exposed to many different perspectives I would not have otherwise been exposed to. Our class discussions are very enriching.

As an international student and internationally trained lawyer, everything has been new for me. But, I can honestly say that I have felt at home here. Whenever I’ve had a question OsgoodePD has been there to help me. The program offers personalized career and academic advising as well as countless opportunities for professional development.
